Lyoto Machida to Fight Shogun Rua at UFC 104

With current No. 1 contender Quinton "Rampage" Jackson electing to face Rashad Evans rather than take an immediate shot at regaining the UFC's light-heavyweight title, Brazilian slugger Mauricio "Shogun" Rua has reportedly agreed to be new champ Lyoto Machida's first title challenger.

While speculation of the potential bout has been widely circulating since the announcement of Jackson and Evans as coaches on "TUF 10," Portuguese-language website SuperLutas reports Rua has signed on for the bout.

UFC President Dana White himself began the speculation when he posted the message "Look who's in the office today!!!" on his Twitter account Tuesday afternoon. The message included a photo of White with Rua.

The SuperLutas report claims Rua signed a contract extension and agreed to the Machida fight at that time.

Rua last fought in April, earning a first-round TKO victory over Chuck Liddell. Following the bout, White made it clear he was impressed with the performance.

Pretty sure Mark Coleman held his own against Shogun on his feet until they could both barely move from exhaustion.. Anderson Silva who many consider the greatest MMA striker in the world trains with Machida and says that Machida gets the better of him when sparring. Shogun will not win this fight on the feet.. at all.

MMAssassin is completely right. Expect Rua to look a lot like Thiago Silva in this fight and expect a similar result. Rua is easy to hit, will likely gas and will probably not be able to take Machida down at all. Machida is a far better striker, is faster and has brilliant take down defense with a strong ground game to handle anything if it ever got there. Rua can only hope to pull a Matt Serra. Seeing as Machida is the most difficult guy to hit in MMA.. Don't count on it. Machida by TKO.

I think of all the people in the LHW division, Shogun poses the greatest threat. He looked great against Chuck Liddell and this fight with Machida will truly show if he has returned or if the Liddell TKO was a fluke. If a healthier Shogun shows up to face Machida, he will have a lot to worry about. Shogun has tremendous leg kicks, better than Machida. Machida is a better wrestler, but Shogun has great ground game. It's up in the air, but no matter who wins, one thing is certain: MMA fans will have witnessed what might be one of the greatest fights ever.

Please do me a favor, last Anonymous guy to post here;come back and post after the fight is over,in this same thread and tell me that then.I honestly don't know one intelligent well informed MMA journalist, fan, casual fan even, coach, other fighter, ect. ect. that honestly in their heart of hearts thinks Shogun has more then a punchers chance vs. Machida. So until then Mr. Anonymous, take care...hope to hear from you after the fight, when ever that will be.

Lyoto is a great fighter and will give anyone he punche son with..problems!!!

Shogun is looking better but needs to be cautious, as Lyoto is champ now and that is a very powerful thing to have behind you.

I jus hope rampage knocks out rashad.....and doesnt lose his no.1 contenders spot...coz if HE loses then its back down the ladder for him !

Sorry Shogun fans-unless we dont see the Rua that awed amazed us at Pride, the Dragon will certainly owe his ass! I'm no Rua fan but I was impress by the way he fought at pride against Rampage. For a time he made a follower out of me. But now, I don't think he stands a rats ass of a chance winning against Machida. He doesn't have the fire and power he use to have during his Pride days. And to all the Machida fans out there- we will certainly be seeing a lot of our LHW Champ because with his style and skills that is unprecedented he will reign for a long, long time!!

Lmao, I can't believe people are...how can I put it nicely, ...fucking stupid enough to think Rua has a chance in HELL! Rua is extremely mediocre and has only fought 3 times in the last 3 years! Forest choked him out in 07' then he came back this year to face an old Coleman and looked like total shit, barely got by him infact! Then he faced Liddell.....and won, so basically he has beat 2 old men that would of curb stomped him in their prime...oh wait Coleman did, just in 2006! Rua is so overrated its sickening, he should be fighting Evans in my opinion not Machida.....he does not deserve a title shot yet.Well whatever though, it will just be another EASY win on Machida's record. Oh and to you dumb fucks that obviously know jack shit about MMA, Machida is NOT a runner, he is a tactician. He is extremely technical and doesn't just stand toe to toe and brawl, he makes his opponent swing, miss and then makes them pay. Go back to watching WWE or fucking Tough man competitions where your simple asses belong..Everyone knows Machida is no joke and have for years in the professional circuit.Rua is decent, but no where near the level of skill as Machida. As in.. Machida will make him look like an amateur at UFC 104. Mark my words, write em down, come back and tell me how right I was. lol.

Lyoto is ryu from the streetfighter series
To the guy who said anderson was afraid of other brazilians....no more drugs for you

I'd rather shogun fight better competition before jumping at machida, but whatever. Not a very smart move in my opinion

rofl to the coment above you silly boi.. ill quickly point out that a streetfighter wouldnt touch machida obv.. but anyway yea i know shogun is getting back to the way he was but i still dont think he is gunna be able to beat machida. i mean yea maybe if he gets him to the ground he could get a burst of GnP but just after watching machidas last few fights we all know shogun isnt going to get it to the ground. which means machida will* find an opeing when showgun gets tired and will hold the belt.

Brazilains have been fighting in the UFC from the begining, and have been fighting each other the same as Americans fighting Americans or any other nationality. To people who think Machida has no ground game you are nieve.

Damn, this match really makes me sad 'cause I like both guys a lot and I'm not sure whom to root for.... Why, Dana, WHY?!

Still, will be interesting. Shogun's an aggressive and technical striker while Machida is technical as well but very elusive and unorthodox. My guess is Shogun will try to close the distance and clinch him while Machida will try to keep him on the outside and if he gets in close will use his sweeps.

Man, sucks that one of these guys will have to lose 'cause like I said I like them both a lot. :(

Jackson's a coach AGAIN on "TUF"??? Oh, come on, show some new faces! I am interested in their grudge match though. That will be a very interesting bout too.

LHW is the best division in the UFC by far.

I hate how the UFC gives undeserving fighters title shots...

Shogun is BRUTAL now without leg stomps......and has had 2 terrible showings in 3 fights....id like to see him face ONE more top/good contender to deserve some type of title shot

Shoguns gonna have Machida babies after this fight

Fighting is as a part of Brazilian culture as Baseball is to America. I'm glad the UFC is actually opening it's doors to the world and not just North American & European fighters. This will be very interesting in the years to come.

Lyoto and Rua are masters of the fighting arts. My only concern is the damage Rua's body has sustained throughout his career. There's no doubt in my mind that Rua will win if he's 0, his muy thai and Jui Jitsu are par with that of his former teammate, Anderson Silva. He is a master of angles and position, just like Lyoto. His cardio is called into question lately but that was due to the ring rust he suffered during the Pride/ UFC buy out. Rua will bring his A game and will dethrone the rising star, Lyoto. I will be rooting for Rua all the way. If Rua doesn't win, look for the angry, hungry once again Brandon The Truth Vera to be the first. Mark my words....

Judging by his last 3 fights Rua will get his ass handed to him. I think the only reason he is getting a title shot is because there is nobody else to fight him. He is winning by default. I think Thiago Silva would put up more of a fight but Machida has already beat him. Can't see this being a good fight.

And for people who think Machida is useless on the ground. He is a Blackbelt in BJJ and has the best takedown defence in the UFC. The only time we have really seen him on the ground is when he won by submission.

Wonder what kind of Rua we will see. He looked really bad in his 1st 2 UFC bouts, and in the Liddell fight it was hard to see where his cardio was at (plus beating Liddell isn't much a a feat these days). I still don't know if Rua will never be what he was in Pride, or if he just had a lull from his knee surgery and is now back at the 100% Rua we love.

Rua's goal will be to see if he can win even one round. Machida has yet to lose a round in the UFC.
The first challenger to even win a round with Loyota should win a prize from Dana. Something like
miracle round of the night :-)

    WOW
This fight will be explosive and I want Shogun to win. However, I think this fight is happening a bit to soon for Shogun. But if he goes to Sao Paolo and train as hard as he did for the Chuck Liddell fight, at least we can say he has a better chance than most of defeating the dragon.

Machida is a Black Belt Ju-jitsu. Has submissions as good as anyone. Never had to go there too much as he beats in other ways. He is probably stronger than Rua, Quicker, and hits harder.
Rua is a great athletic, but Machida is probably more. Machida'a cardio will outlast Rua.
Sorry, but Machida killed a fellow Brazian Thiag Silva a few fights ago, as some seem to forget.
Machida will probably reign undefeated as light heavy weight champion. Do think that Anderson
Silva is being setup for 205 title after he beats Forrest--And Machida will win that also.
Not withstanding, the facts are facts--Machida haters should still bet on him, cause he will still win the fight and get you the $$$$

I think all this talk about Brazilians not wanting to fight fellow Brazilians is overblown. Wandy and Lyoto both said fighting is their job and they would fight anyone.

The fact that Rua took this fight shows me he thinks along the same lines as those two.

BTW, the three I mentioned above happen to some of the top fighters Brazil has to offer. Spider is on record as saying he didn't want to fight another Brazilian and especially Machida. Do I see maybe some worry/fear in his case instead? Maybe!

No other explanation how can a fighter whose goal is to be champion, pass the opportunity to get the world tittle? Rua and Machida will be a Fantastic match though.....they are both excellent fighters ...I wouldn't like anybody to lose but I have to say Machida is at his prime time at the moment and the win should be his.....sorry Shogun
